In the news

By: Ron Counts | Culpeper Star Exponent

After their first season with the Eastern View High School track team, coaches Lauren Rose and Alex Forte were looking for a way to keep the Cyclones in shape over the summer.

Hence, the Blue Ridge Elite Track Club was born, and three of its members recently qualified to compete in the Junior Olympics, which begin July 28 in Humble, Texas.

“Alex and I really wanted to create an AAU club to keep the kids active,” Rose said. “She approached me with the idea of doing it this summer, I said OK and it’s been great.”

Eastern View graduate Dominic Colbert qualified in the 400-meter hurdles, while fellow graduate Courtney Thomas earned a spot in the 100-meter dash. Neither will make the trip to Texas, according to Rose.

Josh Brown, however, will make the trip south and is expected to compete July 30 through Aug. 2.

The rising junior at EVHS qualified to compete in the 400 and 110 hurdles.

All three qualified for the Junior Olympics June 29 at a meet in Hampton.

Rose said the club has averaged about eight kids per session since beginning June 1.
